Why Australia is a great place for adrenaline junkies
While some countries are known for that ‘one’ activity, Australia doesn’t have an activity that it’s solely known for because there are just so many epic activities to experience.. So, if you’re wondering what’s interesting in Australia, read on!
Australia is one of a kind. With unique experiences with wildlife that can’t be achieved anywhere else in the world (and trust us, they’re really cool), beautiful natural landscapes that are the perfect setting for your adrenaline activities, and iconic attractions that will get your heart pumping no matter your destination, Australia is THE place for adrenaline junkies and those that love a thrill.
The best adrenaline rush experiences in Australia
Whether you’re looking for the Australian activities that give you the most adrenaline or happy with your regular buzz, work your way through our Australian adrenaline activities and experiences list to find your best thrill-seeking activity.
1. Swim with whale sharks
You haven’t visited Western Australia until you’ve swam with the whale sharks in Exmouth. Hugging the Western Australian coastline off of Exmouth and Coral Bay, Ningaloo Reef is one of the world’s largest fringing reefs, home to the world’s biggest fish – the whale shark. Experience the exhilarating feeling of swimming with the whale sharks in Exmouth between March and early August each year. The Exmouth whale shark tours are full day experiences and while this activity will give you a hit of adrenaline as you’re dwarfed in comparison, you can rest assured that the whale shark is vegetarian and has only a mild curiosity to your presence.
2. Skydive over Mission Beach
This epic adrenaline skydiving activity is a must for any thrill seekers exploring Far North Queensland. Pick up your Britz campervan in Cairns and make the 2-hour road trip south to the legendary skydive Mission Beach. Operated by Skydive Australia, at Mission Beach Skydive, you can take on the 8,000ft tandem or for maximum adrenaline skydiving the 15,000ft tandem is calling your name.

3. Swim with crocodiles in Darwin
Come face-to-face with arguably Australia’s most dangerous predator at the Cage of Death. For 15 minutes look death right in the eye as you are immersed into a clear glass container surrounded by the infamous saltwater crocodile. Feel the adrenaline rise as you witness the three-tonne bite force of this modern-day dinosaur. You can take on the Cage of Death solo or bring a friend, and after this adrenaline pumping experience spend the rest of the day exploring the rest of the famous Crocosaurus Cove.
4. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Seeking adrenaline activities in Sydney? Well, look no further than the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. Often rated as the number one attraction in Australia (although we’ll let you be the judge of that), the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb may seem like an easy task, but trust us, you’ll be experiencing the adrenaline kick in as you climb up the 134 metres above sea level.
5. Abseil off the world’s highest dam
When you think of adrenaline activities in Australia, you may not immediately jump to abseiling off the world’s highest dam but that’s what makes Australia special – it keeps on surprising you. Pick up your Britz camper in Hobart, Tasmania and make the 2.5-hour road trip to Gordan Dam. Here, overlooking the world’s highest dam, don your harness and abseil down the smooth face of the 140-metre dam wall. It’ll be an adrenaline fuelled activity you’ll be telling all your friends about when you return.
6. Dive with Great White Sharks in Port Lincoln
There may be a cage separating you from the jaws of the Great White Shark, but that is something you’ll be reminding yourself of over and over again as you greet the Great White in its natural habitat. Located off the coast of Port Lincoln in South Australia, Calypso Star Charters is an immensely impressive Australian adrenaline activity. With no previous diving experience required, you can enjoy the rush in a full-day shark cage dive tour or between December and January. Join at twilight for an extra adrenaline fuelled twist!
7. Take a tree top walk
One you can’t miss on your Western Australia motorhome travel itinerary is the Tree Top Walk in the Valley of the Giants. This famous 600m-long walkway enables you to walk among the canopy of the giant forests in Denmark in the southwest of Western Australia. Open from 9am to 5pm each day (with ticket sales finishing at 4:15pm) take on the heights while simultaneously appreciating the fragile forest ecosystem all around you. Once you’ve tackled the Tree Top Walk, wander through the forest tracks below and enjoy a delicious picnic by the circular pool.
8. Jump off the bungy tower in Cairns
We couldn’t put together a list of Australia adrenaline activities without including the famous Skypark Cairns by AJ Hackett. Australia’s one and only bungy experience, the Skypark Cairns by AJ Hacket towers 50 metres above a natural lagoon and provides stunning views across the Cairns and Far North Queensland region as you jump. With 16 jump styles, water touch experiences and operating rain or shine, this is one adrenaline experience you must add to your Australian travel itinerary. Plus, they’ll even give you a free t-shirt so you can prove to everyone you bossed this epic adrenaline activity.
9. Abseil in the Grampians
Whatever your skill level, you can add abseiling in the Grampians to your Australian adrenaline activities travel itinerary. Tackle the heights and scale the beautiful Halls Gap mountains, with abseils from 8m to 30m available. Easily slotted into your Victoria road trip travel itinerary, Grampians abseiling sessions run at both 9am and 1pm daily.
10. Try out surfing
It’s an iconic Australian experience for a reason - surfing is heavily embedded into Australian life. With plenty of beaches to choose from, from the famous Bondi Beach in New South Wales, the legendary Bells Beach in Victoria, the gorgeous Rottnest Island in Western Australia, or incredible Snapper Rocks in Queensland, we really could go on and on listing all the best surf spots in Australia. If you’re looking for the ones best suited for your road trip travel itinerary, check out this guide of Australian beaches and islands to explore.

11. Drive a race car in Sydney
Another fantastic adrenaline activity in Sydney that is guaranteed to get your heart pumping is the Fasttrack V8 Race Experience. Get in the driver’s seat of a powerful V8 race car (or if that’s too much for you, you can also hop in the passenger seat as a race car driver spins you around the tracks) and take on the twists and turns at the Sydney Motorsport Park. This famous Sydney V8 supercar experience is available on select days throughout the year so be sure to book ahead.
12. Ride in an airboat in Darwin
Combine a V8 airboat with Darwin’s only jet boat tour and you’ll have a great adrenaline fuelled experience in the Northern Territory’s Top End. Commencing from Stokes Hill Wharf near the Darwin CBD, spend an hour spinning, diving, and cruising around the beautiful surrounds with Darwin airboat tours. Expect speed, wildlife spotting and to get a little bit muddy. This Darwin Adventure Boats tour is open all year round but is dependent on the tides so be sure to plan it into your road trip travel itinerary.
13. Go zip-lining
Fly through the South Queensland forests on the impressive Gold Coast zipline experience. The largest and highest guided zipline tour, the Canyon Flyer Guided Zip-Line is suspended more than 60m off the ground and, over seven huge ziplines, stretches a whopping 1.5km in length. Experience the adrenaline as you reach speeds of up to 70km an hour as you whip through the canopy. If you’re looking to combine stunning rainforest with adrenaline activities, you’ll want to put zip lining in the Gold Coast high up on your travel itinerary.
14. Fly over the water in a jetpack
An Australian adrenaline activity that is not limited to one location, Jetpack Adventures enables you to experience the adrenaline of a 5 to 15 minute flight in Sydney, Gold Coast, Perth and more. Available seven days a week, visit solo, with a friend or with a group of four.
