Route Description
From the centre of Motueka, head 1.5 km down Tudor Street and Harbour Road to Motueka Quay and then turn left. There is a car park 200 metres down the quay, from where the off-road trail heads north along the coast. It is well signposted as the Great Taste Trail. If you wish to shorten the ride by 7 km you can start from Riwaka instead. Much of the trail runs parallel to roads on the way to the small town of Riwaka, where you will pass a couple of tempting cafes on the edge of town, with the the Ginger Dynamite being particularly popular.
After refuelling, continue following the Great Taste marker posts. They guide you through a reserve and an orchard before crossing a distinctive blue suspension bridge over the Riwaka River. The path then hugs the coast before climbing for 10 minutes over Turners Bluff, and entering the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. The next section is through regenerating native forest on an easy, wide mountain bike track called Easy Rider. It’s 3 km of fun, but takes a little more skill to ride. Easy Rider leads right to Kaiteriteri – a small holiday village with a playground, general store, café, and, of course, the beach.
Don’t Miss
Kaiteriteri is teeming with people during the summer holidays. It’s a great swimming spot, as well as being the ‘gateway’ to Abel Tasman National Park, famous for its tramping and sea kayaking. The Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park has many kilometres of excellent single track, for those keen on rougher trails.
Cafes: There are several cafes in Motueka (Toad Hall is one of the best), two in Riwaka and one in Kaiteriteri. Shoreline Café right in the centre of Kaiteriteri is delectable.
