But first, what you need to know about the hot pools in New Zealand
Many hot pools in New Zealand use water that originates from a hot spring. This is water that is heated underground by geothermal activity. One of the benefits of water from a hot spring is that it is rich in minerals that can help ease body aches and pains. At the very least, a good soak generally leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Hot pools are also a fun experience for families. Many New Zealand hot pool complexes are well set up with hydroslides and pools that cater to younger family members.
Note: Because thermal water is untreated, it’s generally recommended that you don’t put your head underwater. This isn’t always the case in larger complexes, but it pays to check. It’s also recommended that pregnant people and young children avoid sulphur pools and very hot pools.

Hot Water Beach, Coromandel
If you’re travelling around Coromandel in New Zealand’s North Island and fancy a soak, you’re in luck. More than just another beautiful stretch of coastline, Hot Water Beach is also a top spot for a hot soak. Dig your own natural spa just metres from the Pacific Ocean. Hire a shovel from the local surf shop, find a spot to dig, and enjoy! Soak in the soothing warm water as you enjoy the chilled-out beachy vibes. The best time to visit for a hot soak is two hours either side of low tide. Afterwards, tuck into an ice cream or milkshake from Hahei Ice Cream and Takeaways. For a great campsite nearby, head to Hot Water Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park.
Kaitoke Hot Springs, Great Barrier Island, Auckland
The beautiful national marine park of Great Barrier Island lies within Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. This remote island can be reached either by plane or a 4.5-hour ferry ride. You can take your campervan or motorhome to Great Barrier on the SeaLink car ferry. We recommend booking in at one of the DOC campgrounds (freedom camping is not available on the island). Great Barrier is totally off-grid and relies on renewable solar energy. It’s also around 100 km away from the city lights making it an unbeatable spot for stargazing. The island is also home to the Kaitoke Hot Springs. To reach these natural pools, take the one-hour walk along the Kaitoke Hot Springs Track. The path follows an ancient shoreline traversing the Kaitoke wetlands and regenerating forest. Keep an eye out for some of the island’s birdlife including the black petrel and spotless crake. You may also see orchids and sundew flowers close to the track.
Polynesian Spa, Rotorua
Located in New Zealand’s thermal capital of Rotorua, the Polynesian Spa is an experience not to be missed. Established in 1972, this world-leading natural hot mineral bathing and spa treatment facility was built on the site of historic bathhouses. There are several pool packages to choose from including the Deluxe Lake Spa and Lakeview Private Pools. But the Family Pool is the go-to for those with kids. They’ll have a blast whizzing down the hydroslides and splashing in the large swimming pool. The large pool is chlorinated and has a toddlers’ section too. For some sustenance during your swim, enjoy a gelato or lunch at the onsite café.
Waikite Valley Hotpools, Rotorua
Located 30 minutes’ drive from central Rotorua, the Waikite Valley Hotpools are tucked away within a tranquil garden of native flaxes and ferns. Making use of the area’s natural thermal heat, water is drawn straight from the Te Manaroa natural boiling spring and is cooled before filling the pools. Waikite Valley Hotpools is the only complex of this size in New Zealand using only 100% pure natural geothermal water. There are a number of pools to choose from, as well as private spas and outdoor tubs. Alongside the complex is the Te Manaroa Eco-Trail which takes around 10-15 minutes to walk. Best of all, you can stay onsite. The campground has powered and non-powered sites, with shower, laundry, and kitchen facilities. And the big bonus is that campers have unlimited free access to the pool complex.

Otumuheke Stream, Taupō
While you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to hot pools in Taupo, our pick is the Otumuheke Stream. Soak away your aches and warm up in the natural rock pools surrounded by picturesque views of the mighty Waikato River. The Otumuheke Stream area includes changing rooms, lockers, and toilets. Relax on the river edge lounging platforms and enjoy a hot drink from the coffee kiosk. You can also learn more about the historic significance of the area from storyboards around the hot pools. Adjacent to the bathing area is the start of the Huka Falls Walk which leads to Huka Falls, one of the most popular Taupo attractions.
Hot Tubs Omarama
For a seriously good soak surrounded by incredible South Island views, Hot Tubs Omarama, located in Twizel, is the place to be. The tubs are filled with pure New Zealand water sourced from the surrounding mountains. The water is then heated with locally sourced wood. You can even change the temperature yourself by adding cool water or turning up the heat from the natural wood fire. For a truly special experience, visit at night and make the most of the clear southern skies with a little stargazing.
Tekapo Hot Springs
A visit to the Tekapo Hot Springs is a truly special experience. The water is soothing and relaxing, and the views are simply sublime. Three hot pools are filled from an underground source near Tekapo. While the water is not geothermal it is exceptionally pure. Each pool offers a different view; the vivid blue of Lake Tekapo, snow-covered mountain ranges, and pine forests. Cool off with the kids in the Godley Pool or relax and watch them have fun in the Aqua Play Area. As the sun sets, marvel at the changing light and colours on the mountains. As darkness falls, watch as the sky comes to life in a dazzling display of stars. Tekapo and the wider McKenzie region are part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The reserve is one of only 11 worldwide and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa
The famous mineral-rich waters of Hanmer Springs have been soothing aching muscles for 150 years. Mind you, back then it looked a little different! The pool complex began life as no more than a shed, but it was the healing thermal waters that attracted visitors from far and wide. Today, Hanmer Springs boasts 22 outdoor thermal pools including cascades, rock pools, and sulphur pools. For an extra treat, book in a massage or facial treatment at the spa. If you’re coming as a family, prepare to spend the entire day. There’s loads to keep the kids busy from dawn til dusk including New Zealand’s largest aquatic thrill ride. The complex is nestled among picture-postcard mountains and forestry in the resort town of Hanmer Springs. It’s worth taking your time to enjoy everything on offer in this lovely little village. We recommend parking your campervan up at the Hanmer Springs TOP 10 Holiday Park.
He Puna Taimoana Hot Pools, Christchurch
Just 15 minutes’ drive from central Christchurch at New Brighton Beach, the He Puna Taimoana hot pools is a must-do when you’re visiting the city. From family fun to restful relaxation (or both!), it’s all here with five heated pools, a separate plunge pool, and a sauna. The changing rooms are heated and there’s an onsite café if you fancy a coffee while the kids play. Just five minutes away, you’ll find the South Brighton Holiday Park. The park is just metres from the beach, and with the pools nice and handy, you’ve got the option to warm up or cool down whenever it suits.
